The process of selecting your new home...

Whether buying your first home, dream home, or investment property, it can be an exciting and complex process. There are many tools and resources available to you before you begin your search, starting with a consultation with a real estate professional. Since buying a home is likely the biggest investment you’ll ever make, the upfront preparation and planning will save you time and money and make the entire process a positive experience.

To save time in the home selection process, start by making a list of what you like and dislike about your current home. This information will prove invaluable as you review your house hunting needs with your Realtor. Things to consider as you make your wish list:

  • What style of home do you prefer: ranch, 2-story, or something else?
  • Do you prefer older homes or something newer?
  • What size home do you need in terms of bedroom count, bath count?
  • Is square footage more important than room count?
  • What is your kitchen preference…open to other living areas?  Breakfast bar or dining space?
  • Parking space for how many cars?
  • Living room and dining room areas….formal or informal? Separate family room?
  • What exterior features are most important… brick, stone, siding; yard; fence; wooded areas?

The MLS system is just one of many informational resources available to Realtors to assist you in selecting the right home.
